“Growing Searcy” By Growing Gov’t?

We hate to give them any free press, but the promoters of the A&P Tax have launched a website, full of twisted facts and this video which claims we can grow our local economy by raising taxes:

The idea that growing taxes/government will grow business is absurd and flies in the face of economic history and logic.  Federal taxes are going up.  Sales taxes are at an all-time high in the U.S. And unemployment is over 10%.  Is this really the time to be raising taxes on consumers?

We are all for growing Searcy–but we are not all in favor of growing government, especially during a recession.  Time to go back to the drawing board.

He keeps saying “fee” and “charge” — blatantly avoiding using the word “tax.” He also says that only visitors to Searcy will pay the hotel tax — also not the whole truth. The tax will also apply to meeting rooms that are rented out, which will likely affect many local organizations.

And, of course, he’s advising people to vote “yes” on April 13 …. won’t they be surprised to find out the word doesn’t appear on their ballots???

My question is how in the world raising taxes on hotel and motel stays and on restruant bills is going to increase tourism in Searcy? He also listed other places in Arkansas that have A&P Taxes. I understand that those place that do have existing A&P Taxes had a reason for detailed reason for collecting the funds prior to the establishment of the tax. He keeps talking about improving our parks and sports complexes. Haven’t we been spending a lot of money in the last two decades improving those facilities? Where were those funds coming from and why have they stopped showing up all of a sudden. Seems to me like they just want a slush fund. I wouldn’t doubt that if God forbid this does get voted in that the funds collected begin disappearing into peoples pockets and into some very unworthy or unethical projects.
