Today on the radio, I heard a few seconds of Rush Limbaugh drawing some contrasts between President Reagan and the current GOP field. I encourage you to watch the following video clips of Reagan’s presidential announcement speech from 1980. He did not mince words about the Carter record. He stood up for the American people and challenged Carter head-on, by name, and on his record, with no apologies. Whichever 2012 GOP candidate emerges with this boldness will be the nominee–and they’ll be the next president.
Some seem to think that comparisons between Obama & Carter are an exaggeration. Here are a few stats to help put it in perspective:
- Unemployment among African-Americans, 1980: 14%
- Unemployment among African-Americans, June 2011: 17.2%
We all came from different lands, but we share the same values, the same dream. Today, a President of the United States would have us believe that dream is over or at least in need of change.
The Carter record is a litany of despair, of broken promises, of sacred trusts abandoned and forgotten.
His answer to all of this misery? He tries to tell us that we are only in a recession, not a depression, as if definitions, words relieve our suffering. Let it show on the record, when the American people cried out for economic help, Jimmy Carter hid behind a dictionary.
If it’s a definition he wants, I’ll give him one. A recession is when your neighbor loses his job. A depression is when you lose yours. And recovery is when Jimmy Carter loses his.
I have talked with unemployed workers all across this country. They’re out of work, they know who put them there and they know the difference between a recession and a depression. Let Mr. Carter go to their homes, look their children in the eye, and argue with them that it’s only a recession that put their mom or dad out of work.
Now, call this human tragedy whatever you want. Whatever it is, it’s Jimmy Carter’s. He caused it, he tolerates it, and he’s going to answer to the American people for it.
And for what it’s worth, this speech reminded me of another one I heard recently…
