Citizens Group Forms to Oppose County Tax Increase
Voters Demand Accountability from Officials
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 22, 2011
Searcy, AR – Today, Searcy citizen Nicholas Horton filed paperwork with the State Ethics Commission to form “Citizens for Responsible Taxation.” This citizens group will focus on informing voters about the proposed White County tax increase that goes before the voters on September 13th.
“We are not against all taxation—we recognize that some taxes are necessary and we do need infrastructure improvements in our county. However, the structure and timing of this proposal is fundamentally flawed,” said Chairman Horton.
“The county & city only need $6 million for their portion of the Searcy bypass costs, but the proposal will extract $18 million from our local economies and be redistributed to the city governments. If these politicians expect us to hand over that much money, we need very specific information about how this money will be spent,” Horton said.
“It seems like these politicians are constantly trying to raise taxes and there is never any real accountability for the money. The voters of White County need to ask themselves if they want to be on the hook for the city of Searcy’s bypass.”
“Furthermore, this is a terrible time to be raising any taxes. Our national economy remains on the brink of disaster and we are not immune from tough times here in White County, as evidenced by the recent closing of Yarnell’s. The current proposal would cost each resident of White County approximately $233.53. That is money straight out of our local economy and into the government coffers. Citizens for Responsible Taxation & its supporters think the people of White County need that money more than the government does.”
